Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Mele Johnson and senior
Emma Sindelar each scored their ninth goals of the season to propel the Swarthmore College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over No. 19 nationally-ranked Gettysburg in the semifinal round of the Centennial Conference Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 8 at Clark Field. With the victory, the Garnet advanced to tomorrow afternoon's championship match against No. 22 Johns Hopkins.
The Garnet, who were playing a nationally-ranked opponent for a program-high fourth time this season, got on the board in the ninth minute and never surrendered the lead. Johnson unleashed a shot that got past goalkeeper Eliza Gray and landed in the back of the net. Defensively, the back line consisting of senior
Ellen Bachmannhuff, junior
Amanda Bosworth, junior
Aine Schanche and sophomore
Katherine Zavez did not allow the Bullets to attempt a shot on target in the frame.
Gettysburg (13-4-1), which entered the afternoon on a nine-game winning streak, came out firing in the second half and would hold a commanding 8-1 advantage in total shots through the remainder of regulation. Lauren Shapiro took the team's first shot on goal of the entire match in the opening minutes that would be saved by Garnet junior goalkeeper
Reba Magier. The Bullets also earned three corner kicks in the first 15 minutes that were successfully cleared away by the Garnet defense.
Swarthmore (13-6), however, was able to double its lead to pull away on its first shot attempt of the second half when Sindelar found the back of the net for the 38th time of her career in transition by finishing a pass from junior
Melissa Trofa in the 81st. Gettysburg attempted to rally by earning several more corner kicks in the waning minutes, but one of them was headed away by Bachmannhuff and another resulted in a shot off the head of Georgia Ferguson that went wide of the net. A last desperation shot by Shapiro was turned away by Magier, and the Garnet once again survived and advanced in postseason play.
The win was Swarthmore's first over a nationally-ranked team since beating then-No. 25 Dickinson by a 1-0 score on Nov. 4, 2009 at Clothier Field. The victory was also the first over a nationally-ranked squad on the road since knocking off top-ranked College of New Jersey in a 4-3 decision on Sept. 17,2008.
Magier finished the match with two saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season and 15th of her career for Swarthmore. Gettysburg's Gray redirected five shots in the losing effort.
Swarthmore will make its second appearance overall and first since 2006 in the championship match tomorrow afternoon against No. 22 Johns Hopkins, which held off Ursinus by a 2-1 score in the other semifinal. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
