Box Score CARLISLE, Pa. – Sophomore
Billy Evers netted his fourth goal of the season in the 103rd minute to propel the Swarthmore College men's soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory in double overtime over 16th-ranked Dickinson on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Miller Memorial Field. Playing shorthanded with 10 men, the Garnet rallied to pick up their third victory of the season in extra time to stay in contention for a playoff berth.
The game remained scoreless for the first period and into the break, with both teams trading shots and neither gaining a clear advantage. Dickinson (11-3-1, CC 6-1) was the first to score in the 56th minute when Alfred Hylton-Dei found the back of the net on a left-footed shot from the right side of the Swarthmore six off an assist from Drew Carneal.
With only ten players competing after a red card sent a Garnet defender off the field, Swarthmore (9-5-2, CC 3-4) managed to overcome adversity and scored in the 86th minute with a goal coming from freshman
Tommy Sheehan. After a shot from junior
David Geschwind drew a diving save from Dickinson's Reed Milbrath, Sheehan jumped on the rebound and converted the first marker of his career.
The Garnet maintained their momentum through the first overtime and scored a little over two minutes into the second overtime. Freshman
Michael Nafziger dove to win a
Michael Swantek throw that Dickinson partially controlled and poked the ball to Evers, who turned, drove to his left, and struck a curling 23-yard dagger into the far left corner to defeat the Red Devils. The goal gave Swarthmore its third victory in double overtime this season, and all of those wins have come on the road.
Garnet junior goalkeeper
Tyler Zon kept Swarthmore's playoffs hopes alive with nine saves, while the Red Devils' Milbrath also had nine saves in the losing effort.
Swarthmore, which moved into a tie for the fifth and final conference playoff spot with the win, completes its three-match road swing when it travels to play Washington College in Chestertown, Md. on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m., which is a change from the previously announced time of 3:30.
