Abbey Deckard Recorded her first career double-double and junior
Elle Larsen closed in on a scoring milestone to help lift the Swarthmore College women's basketball team to a 74-57 road victory over Washington College on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at the Cain Athletic Center.
Washington College (5-12, CC 4-7) started the game on a 6-0 run while holding the Garnet scoreless for nearly four minutes. Larsen, however, started a Swarthmore streak of eight unanswered to put the visitors ahead by nailing a jumper in the paint. After senior Latisha Pledger tied the game at 8s, the Garnet stayed hot and moved ahead by twin figures on a
Chastity Hopkins layup that made it 21-10 with 8:15 left. Thanks in large part to an 11-point effort through 20 minutes by Larsen, Swarthmore remained ahead for the remainder of the half and took a 32-26 advantage into the break.
The Garnet moved back ahead by double digits in the second half when Deckard made her third shot of the game in four attempts from beyond the arc to make it 40-28 at the 16:54 mark. The Shorewomen did not go away quietly and made it a one-possession game on a good jumper from junior Emily Hubley, but Larsen seized control on the post and netted 10 straight points to put the Garnet up 54-43. The margin ballooned to as many as 19 on a pair of
Kayla Moritzky charity shots, providing more than enough insurance for Swarthmore to come away with the win and stay in playoff contention.
Larsen registered 23 points and ended the night with 997 in her career to lead the way for Swarthmore. She also grabbed nine rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked two shots. Deckard finished with a double-double by recording 18 points 11 boards, which were both career bests, while Moritzky contributed 12 points and five assists.
Washington College was paced by sophomore Carley Kendall's 13-point, 8-rebound effort. Pledger and Hubley notched eight points apiece.
Swarthmore (10-8, CC 5-7) will look to win its third straight conference game when it visits Johns Hopkins on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m.
