Box Score PASADENA, Calif. – Senior
Katie Lytle registered a double-double before halftime and matched a Centennial Conference single-game record for rebounds in leading the Swarthmore College women's basketball team to a 97-80 rout of Cal Tech on Thursday, Jan. 2 at the Braun Athletic Center. The Garnet led 61-40 at halftime by shooting 61.5 percent from the field, including 8-for-11 from downtown, to cruise to the victory.
Swarthmore (5-5) set the tone early by scoring the game's first five points and 12 of the first 16 just over two minutes. Sophomore
Abbey Deckard started the offensive barrage with a 3-pointer and capped the run by stealing the ball away from junior Bridget Connor and finding senior
Kayla Moritzky for a layup.
Cal Tech (1-10) attempted to rally and came within four on two occasions, but Swarthmore quickly recovered and burst ahead by a 34-20 score at the midway point by getting a trey by senior Stephanie Leichich. A 3-point field goal from freshman
Erin Jenson gave the visitors a 21-point lead at the recess.
Junior
Elle Larsen quickly got the Garnet going in the second half by driving in for a layup just 13 seconds into the stanza. After two made jump shots by the hosts, Swarthmore rattled off nine straight to break out to its largest lead of the game at 72-44 and prompt a Beaver timeout. The hosts sliced the lead down to the teens on multiple occasions, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Lytle racked up 22 points and a career-best 24 rebounds, which included netting 12 and grabbing 15 boards before the break to pace the Garnet. The senior, who shot 10-for-17 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line, also finished with three steals, three assists and two blocks. Larsen scored a game-high 27 points, while Deckerd matched a career high with eight boards.
Connor led Cal Tech with a 21-point effort in the loss for host school. Grace Leishman, a sophomore, had 13 points and seven boards.
Swarthmore resumes Centennial Conference play when it visits Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m.
