Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Katie scored 18 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, but the Swarthmore College women's basketball team dropped a Centennial Conference game to Gettysburg by a 55-47 score on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Bream Gymnasium. Trailing by double digits at halftime, the Garnet slashed the deficit down to one on multiple occasions in the second frame before eventually suffering the tough loss.
Gettysburg (9-5, CC 5-4), which led from wire-to-wire, used a balanced scoring attack in the first half to take control while forcing Swarthmore to shoot just 20 percent (6-for-30) from the field, including 0-for-15 from long range, over the first 20 minutes. Senior captain Rianna Doane led all Bullet scorers with five, while four other Bullet players had contributed four points to lift the hosts to a 26-16 advantage at the break.
The Garnet, however, stormed back in the second half and brought the deficit down to single digits, beginning when junior
Elle Larsen sank a pair of free throws to make it 28-20. Senior
Stephanie Lechich also hit a trey to create a 33-25 score with just over 14 minutes remaining and later another shot from downtown that was set up by junior
Chastity Hopkins to bring the Garnet within three at 37-34 at 7:31. Lytle then followed with a pair of free throws to slash the Bullet lead to one.
Despite a valiant effort to come back, the Garnet would not be able to get over the hump. After Lytle hit two more shots at the stripe to make it 39-38, Caroline Murphy sparked an 8-0 run for the Bullets by nailing a trey with just over five minutes remaining and ending the stretch with a good jumper. The hosts hit free throws down the stretch to escape with the key conference victory.
Lytle's 18-point, 17-rebound effort was also her ninth double-double of the season and sixth in the last seven games to lead Swarthmore. Larsen finished the contest with 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks.
Murphy paced Gettysburg with a team-leading 15 points to go along with four boards. Doane contributed 12 points and made three shots from beyond the arc.
Swarthmore (8-7, CC 3-6) will look to get back on track when it visits archrival Haverford on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 6 p.m. with a point for the Hood Trophy on the line.
