Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior
Katie Lytle notched her seventh double-double of the season, but the Swarthmore College women's basketball team dropped a 61-57 decision to McDaniel in Centennial Conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at Tarble Pavilion. The Green Terror erased a six-point deficit in the second half to put an end to the Garnet's season-high, three-game winning streak.
The teams played what was mostly a one-possession game for the opening 11 minutes. With the hosts trailing by only two, junior
Elle Larsen sparked an 11-0 run by setting up a Lytle jumper and then converting a layup off a missed 3-pointer to break a 16-all tie. Larsen also capped the run with another layup to make it 23-14 , which forced the Green Terror to call a timeout, which helped the Garnet eventually carry a 3-point advantage into the locker room.
Swarthmore (7-6, CC 2-5) maintained its lead for much of the second half and went ahead by as many as six on multiple occasions. But after senior
Stephanie Lechich hit a trifecta to make it 46-42 with 7:10 left, the Green Terror came out of a timeout on a roll and nailed consecutive threes to take their first lead since the midway point of the first half. Junior Steph Perez canned one of the shots from downtown and set up the other one during the streak.
After freshman
Maggie O'Neil was able to tie the game at 48s and appeared to give the Garnet some momentum by sinking two free throws at the 5:44 mark. Sophomore Lindsey Nichols, however, came back the other way with another trey to start a 9-1 run for the Green Terror. McDaniel never trailed the rest of the way and made its free throws down the stretch to escape with the come-from-behind win.
Swarthmore was paced by Lytle, who finished the game with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Elle Larsen had 14 points and six boards to go along with a team-high three assists, while Moritzky also finished in double figures with 10 points.
Perez and Nichols finished with 16 points apiece to lead McDaniel (9-4, CC 4-3). Nichols netted 12 of her 16 points off the bench from beyond the arc in the second half, and Perez also dished out four assists.
Swarthmore wraps up a three-game homestand when it hosts Muhlenberg on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
