Men’s Basketball Comes Up Just Short in 63-57 Loss Against McDaniel

Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Joe Keedy scored a season-high 17 points and freshman Chris Bourne fell just shy of a double-double, but the Swarthmore College men's basketball team fell to McDaniel by a 63-57 score on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at Tarble Pavilion.

Trailing 32-25 at the break, Swarthmore came out with a vengeance in the second half by scoring six straight points. Keedy hit a 3-pointer on the Garnet's first possession and then set up a Jay Kober trey that tied the game at 34s at the 17:22 mark. The hosts would continue to hang around and eventually went ahead, 45-44, when Kober converted a layup shortly after missing a shot from beyond the arc. McDaniel, however, got a layup on the other end from sophomore Anthony Morgan and never trailed the rest of the way.

Swarthmore (5-9, CC 2-5) did not go down without a fight and gave itself plenty of opportunities to tie the game or take the lead. Keedy canned a trifecta to make it 60-57 with less than two minutes remaining after receiving a pass from sophomore Shane Loeffler, and the Garnet got the ball back with a chance to tie after McDaniel's Andrew Merlo was tagged with an offensive foul with 1:25 left. But the Garnet turned the ball over coming out of a timeout and missed a 3-pointer on its next possession for the chance to tie, allowing McDaniel's Merlo to sink another free throw to put the game away.

The Garnet also got off to a fast start in the first half by scoring the game's first four points and eight of the first 11, as Keedy made two field goals in the opening minute before putting back a missed jumper by Barkley to make it 8-3. The Green Terror then chipped away at the early deficit and embarked on a 17-4 run to vault ahead and lead by as many as nine before entering halftime up 32-25.

Keedy netted his season-high 17 points by shooting 7-for-8 from the field and 3-for-4 from long range to pace Swarthmore in the losing effort. Bourne contributed 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting and eight rebounds off the bench, while Loeffler added five points and dished out a season-high four assists.

McDaniel (10-4, CC 5-2) was led by Merlo and sophomore Tim Stewart. Merlo scored 16 points to go along with three helpers in a reserve role, and Stewart posted 12 points and seven boards.

Swarthmore continues Centennial Conference play on the road when it visits Gettysburg on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 1 p.m.
