Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior
Joe Keedy recorded seven points and six rebounds, but the Swarthmore College men's basketball team fell to Johns Hopkins by a 76-47 decision on Saturday, Jan. 11 at Tarble Pavilion.
Johns Hopkins broke out to a 12-3 advantage less than six minutes into the contest. Gene Williams led the charge by netting the Blue Jays' first five points before dishing out an assist to junior Jimmy Hammer, who netted the team's third bucket of the game from beyond the arc.
Swarthmore, however, started to come alive and scored the next six points on 3-point field goals from Keedy and freshman
Luke McCartin to make it a one possession game with 12:56 on the clock. The Garnet kept things close and came within two at 20-18 on a
Shane Loeffler layup at the 7:25 mark, but the Blue Jays responded by ending the half on a 17-8 run and raced to a 37-25 advantage at the recess.
The Blue Jays, who also recorded seven blocked shots in the first half, kept the Garnet defense quiet early in the second frame by limiting the hosts to just three points in the opening six minutes. McCartin took a pass from Loeffler and canned a trifecta to make it 43-28 with 15:53 left to play. The visitors then extended their lead to 30 on a layup by freshman Ryan Curran at the 8:54 mark and maintained a comfortable lead until the final buzzer.
In addition to Keedy, Swarthmore got contributions from sophomore
Seth Liebert and McCartin off the bench. Both players finished with six points, while Liebert also had two steals.
Johns Hopkins (7-6, CC 4-2) was paced by Hammer and junior George Bugarinovic. Hammer finished with a game-high 14 points and Bugarinovic netted 13. Senior Connor McIntyre blocked four shots and also scored eight points.
Swarthmore (5-8, CC 2-4) continues Centennial Conference play when it hosts McDaniel on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 8 p.m.
