Megan Brock attempted eight shots and nearly found the back of the net in the final minute of regulation, but the Swarthmore women's soccer team fell to Widener by a 1-0 decision in a 320 Challenge battle between the institutions on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium. The Garnet dropped their first match of the season despite holding a commanding 22-5 advantage in total shots.
Swarthmore controlled play for the duration of the match and attempted 20 of the first 24 shots between the teams, but Widener (1-0-1) took advantage of a Garnet defensive miscue and broke the scoreless deadlock in the 80th minute. After a cross by Jenna Pedrick from the right side was misplayed in front of the net, Karen Thomas collected the loose ball and chipped it inside the near post to put the Pride on the board.
The Garnet continued to create chances and almost scored the equalizer in the final minute when Brock received a short pass from the right and unleashed a shot from about 12 yards away. Goalkeeper Valarie Perretti, however, came up with the key save to allow the Pride to escape with the one-goal victory.
Reba Magier turned away of the three of the five shots she faced for Swarthmore, which also held a 7-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Widener's Perretti earned the shutout victory by making 16 stops on 22 chances.
Swarthmore (2-1) returns to action this weekend when it visits Wesley on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
