FREDRICKSBURG, Va. - The Swarthmore College women's tennis team opened its fall season with the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament at the University of Mary Washington over the weekend. Six Swarthmore players competed in the tournament, with a mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen earning wins. Senior

Jackie Lane and
Abby Schmidt all reached the semifinals of their respective draws.
Lane paired with English and advanced to the semifinals of the Blue 3 doubles draw. In the first round, they blanked Elizabethtown, 8-0, and then followed with an 8-3 victory in the quarterfinals against Haverford. Lane also earned a singles victory in the Blue 1 draw, defeating Sam Munze of Methodist 6-1, 6-1.
Schmidt reached the semifinals of the Blue 5 singles draw. She first defeated Jamee Hardison of Bridgewater College, 6-0, 6-1, and then dominated Madison McCall of Elizabethtown, 8-2.
In the championship singles draw, senior
Lia Carlson and freshman
Alli Wong both won their first round matches. Carlson won convincingly against Dickinson's Shannon Lavery, 6-1, 6-2 and fought hard in the second round before falling in three sets to Carnegie Mellon's Brooke Tsu (7-6, 6-7(5), 0-6). Wong earned a first-round win against the number one seed from the University of Mary Washington after an injury default.
The team will now prepare for the Swarthmore Invitational, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 5.
