Box Score 2 SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team (14-10, 2-6) and visiting Franklin & Marshall (9-15, 3-5) played in a pair of games that went right down to the final at-bats, with each team winning one half of the Centennial Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon from Clothier Field. Swarthmore took the first game by a score of 4-3 after sophomore Laurie Sellars crossed the plate for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, while the Dips rallied to win the second game 7-6 in extra innings.
Senior Kate Smayda continues her push to set the program record for career hits with a four-hit afternoon, including three in the second game. Freshman Clara Obstfeld also recorded a trio of hits in the second game. Senior Danielle Seltzer led the Swat offense in the first game with two singles.
On the mound, junior Melissa O'Connor (9-3) threw 14 of the day's 15 innings for the Garnet. She struck out 10 and got the win in the first game.
In game one, Swarthmore took advantage of Diplomat miscues to take an early lead. In the second inning, three F&M errors led to three Swat runs, giving the Garnet a 3-0 lead.
Behind O'Connor's strong pitching, the Garnet took a 3-1 into the top of the seventh inning. With their backs to the wall, the Dips rallied, tying the game on a two-run single from Sam DeNoville.
In the bottom of the seventh, Swarthmore again took advantage of F&M errors to win the important Centennial contest. With one out, senior Erin Curtis and Smayda singled on back-to-back at-bats to put runners on first and second. In the next at-bat, junior Jesslyn Lammerts reached via error to load the bases. Junior Nicole Aaron ended the game in the next at bat, as her grounder to second base forced another Dips' error, scoring pitch-runner Sellars and giving Swarthmore the 4-3 win.
The second game played out similar to the first, only the Dips ended up on top. RBI hits from Smayda, Seltzer, Aaron, Obstfeld and junior Chelsea Matzko gave Swat a 6-4 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Just like in the first game, the Dips rallied to tie the game with two runs in the top of seventh. DeNoville blasted a home run to cut the Garnet lead to 6-5 and Caitlin Brust tied the game with a two-out single. Swarthmore threatened in the bottom of the seventh, as Obstfeld opened the inning with a single, but F&M pitcher Justine Lohrey retired the next three in order to force extra innings.
In extras, the Diplomats won the game in the top of the eighth. Maloire Sassman led off the inning with a double off Garnet reliever Sarina Lowe (1-3). Two batters later, Juliane Whitleigh -- who homered earlier in contest -- knocked her home with an RBI single to give F&M a 7-6 lead. Swarthmore threatened in the bottom of the eighth, as junior Rose Pitkin singled and advanced to second base, but a strikeout in the next at-bat ended the game.
Matzko and Aaron each finished game two with doubles, while Matzko and Pitkin picked up two hits apiece.
Swarthmore closes out its homestand on Tuesday when its hosts Eastern. Play is set for 3:00 p.m.
