Women's Basketball Reaches ECAC South Region Championship Game With a 78-63 Victory Over Washington & Jefferson

Box Score

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior Katie Lytle scored a team-high 21 points and sophomore Elle Larsen added 18 points, as the No. 2 seed Swarthmore College women's basketball team used a dominant second-half to defeat No.3 seed Washington & Jefferson by a score of 78-63 on Saturday in the ECAC South Region Semifinals from Moravian College.

With the victory, the Garnet (22-7) advances to the ECAC South Region Championship Game to face No. 1 seed Moravian, which defeated Juniata 68-64 in the day's other semifinal. The championship game will tip at 1 p.m. on Sunday from Moravian. Swarthmore is in the ECAC title game for the first time since 2003 and is seeking its first-ever ECAC Championship.

The Garnet blew open a close game at the half with an outstanding second half of play. Ahead 34-29, the Garnet opened the second half on a 19-4 run, as an Abbey Deckard's three-pointer at the 13:33 mark gave Swarthmore a commanding 53-33 lead.

Valarie Dunlap led the Presidents (21-9) with a game-high 25 points.

Thanks to a 9-0 run midway through the first half, the Presidents held the early advantage, leading 17-11 at the 11:12 mark. Behind some dominant play from Lytle, Swat took back control of the game down the stretch and held a 34-29 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, it was all Swarthmore, particularly from behind the arc. The Garnet buried six triples in the opening eight minutes of second half to quickly extend its lead to 20 points. Deckard and fellow freshman Jessica Jowdy each hit two three-pointers during that run, while senior Eliza Polli and Lytle also added superhoops.

Senior Madeline Ross finished with nine points, while Deckard contributed with eight points. Lytle led the Garnet in rebounding with eight boards.

The Garnet was extremely efficient with the basketball, hitting a season-best 48 percent of its shots and committing just nine turnovers.

Tip-off of the championship game from Moravian is set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
