CHESTERTOWN, Md. - It was a cruel overtime defeat for the Swarthmore College men's basketball team (5-17, 4-11)  as Washington College's Sean Flanigan air-balled a three-point attempt in waning seconds of a tie game, only to see his teammate Sean Brooks catch the offensive rebound under the basket and lay in the game-winning bucket at the buzzer, giving the Shoremen (3-19, 3-12) a 72-70 victory over the Garnet on Wednesday evening.

Swarthmore was led by juniors Joe Keedy and Jay Kober, each of whom finished with a double-double. Keedy scored a career-high 23 points - including the Garnet's final seven points of regulation - while pulling down 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Kober recorded 20 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

A seesaw contest throughout, the Garnet rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit to force overtime. Swarthmore controlled play for the first four minutes of overtime and held a 70-66 entering the final minute. With one minute to go in overtime, the Shoremen's Stephen Poarch forced back-to-back Garnet turnovers and scored following each steal, tying the game 70-70. Junior Jordan Federer had a chance to give the Garnet the lead on its next possession, but he missed a jumper, setting up Washington's game-winning final play.

The Shoremen's Charlie McShane led all scorers with 27 points - 20 of which came in the first half.

The first half was all McShane, as the Washington College senior scored 20 of the Shoremen's first 24 points of the game. Behind his play, Washington built a lead as large 10 points in the first half. Still, Swarthmore was able to battle back, cutting the deficit to 31-27 at the half.

The Shoremen came out strong in the second half, building a nine-point lead at the 10-minute mark, before the Garnet began to mount its comeback. The Garnet responded with a 12-2 run, taking the lead at the 7:40 mark on a lay-up from Keedy.

Down the stretch in regulation, it was neck-and-neck until the final whistle. The Shoremen tied the game at 60 with 14 seconds left in regulation on a pair of free throws from Poarch. The Garnet had one chance to win it in regulation, but Federer missed from three in the final seconds.

Federer finished with a team-high five assists. Senior Will Gates finished with 12 points. Freshman Sean Thaxter had a strong all-around game, finishing with four points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Swarthmore returns home on Saturday for Senior Day against first-place Franklin & Marshall. The game is set for 3:00 p.m. The Alumni Game will begin at 11:00 a.m.
