Gettysburg Holds Off Women's Basketball in Centennial Conference Championship Game, 48-46

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - With a chance to tie the championship game in the final seconds, junior Kayla Moritzky's jumper in traffic hit the back rim, giving homestanding Gettysburg a 48-46 victory over the Swarthmore College women's basketball team in the 2013 Centennial Conference Championship game on Saturday evening from Bream Gym.

Down seven with under six minutes to play, the Garnet (20-7) mounted a furious and hard-fought comeback that came up painstakingly short. Moritzky led the Garnet's comeback, hitting a crucial three-pointer with 1:57 to go to cut the Bullets' lead to one possession at 48-46. She also forced a  turnover with under a minute to play, but it proved not enough for the Garnet. Junior Katie Lytle led the Garnet with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Moritzky added 11 points.

Gettysburg (21-6) was led by Caroline Murphy, who finished with a game-high 19 points. Just like they have all season, the Bullets won the game with their defense, holding the Garnet to just 25 percent shooting for the game.

With the win, the Bullets claim the Centennial title for the first time in program history and earn the conference's automatic spot to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Swarthmore will now await word of a possible at-large berth to the tournament. The field will be announced Monday at 2:30 p.m. via www.NCAA.com.

The Garnet held a 21-18 lead going into the second half, but the Bullets quickly garnered control of the game. A key point in the contest came at the 13:29 mark. Larsen picked up two fouls in matter of seconds - the second of which caused a three-point play that gave the Bullets the lead - forcing her to the bench for over five minutes. With one of the Garnet's best players on the bench, the Bullets extended their lead to seven points.

With just under six minutes to play and down 45-38, the Garnet got a boost when Lytle drilled an open three to make it a four-point game. Swarthmore's momentum would be short-lived, however; Larsen picked up her fifth and final foul on the ensuing possession on a questionable call in the post.

Rather than fade without its best post player in the final five minutes, the Garnet mounted a valiant comeback that nearly resulted in a championship win. A jumper from freshman Jess Jowdy, Moritzky's contested triple and some solid defense made it a one possession game in the final two minutes. Unfortunately for an exhausted Swarthmore squad, the magic ran out in the final two minutes and the Bullets hung for the two-point win.

Larsen finished with 10 points. Senior Eliza Polli added six points. Jessica Porter netted 11 for the Bullets.

Swarthmore will now await of a possible NCAA or ECAC playoff berth. NCAA selections will be announced on Monday at 2:30 p.m. ECAC berths will be announced on Monday evening.
