Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Freshman
Chris Bourne scored 13 points, but the Swarthmore College men's basketball team fell to Dickinson, the reigning Centennial Conference champion, by a 79-59 score on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Kline Center.
The beginning of the game was close with two ties and three lead changes over the opening seven minutes of action. After Bourne nailed a jumper to give the Garnet a 7-5 edge, Dickinson went ahead for good by getting a layup from Ted Hinnenkamp and two free throws from Tom McInerney while not allowing the visitors to convert a field goal for nearly five minutes. A Chris Cox dunk in the final minute gave the Red Devils a commanding 42-22 advantage at the recess.
Swarthmore played Dickinson evenly in the second half and brought a 32-point margin down to 20 by not letting the Red Devils make a field goal for the remaining 4:12 of regulation. However, the late run that was capped by two
Luke McCartin free throws was too little and too late.
Bourne netted his team-leading 13 points for Swarthmore by going 5-for-10 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from the stripe. Freshman
Sam Lebryk and senior
Jay Kober finished with nine and seven points, respectively, while sophomore
Shane Loeffler was a spark off the bench with three points, four rebounds and a career-high four steals.
First-place Dickinson (6-1, CC 4-0) was paced by Adam Honig, who registered a game-high 18 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists.
Swarthmore (3-5, CC 2-2) returns to the hardwood when it hosts Baptist Bible for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m.
