Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Captains
Elle Larsen and
Katie Lytle combined to score 41 points, but the Swarthmore College women's basketball team fell by a 72-61 score to Johns Hopkins on Thursday, Dec. 5 at Tarble Pavilion.
The offenses dominated in the early going, as the teams combined to score 20 points less than three minutes into the contest. Sophomore Katie Clark hit a trifecta that broke a 6-all tie at the 18:11 mark and kept Johns Hopkins ahead for the remainder of the half.
The Blue Jays led by as many as 14 when a Jessica Brown layup made it 30-16 with 8:20 left, but the Garnet began to rally and closed the half on an 11-2 run to slash the deficit down to one heading into the break. Freshman
Maggie O'Neil, who was one of five Garnet players to score during the stretch, made it 36-35 at recess by sinking two free throws to close out the half.
After junior Haley Bush opened the scoring in the second frame on the Blue Jays' first possession, the Garnet continued to rally and took its first lead of the game at 40-38 with 18:45 on the clock when Larsen converted a layup shortly after.
Abbey Deckard canned a trey.
Swarthmore kept a slim lead for the next seven minutes with both teams being plagued by cold shooting until the 11:27 mark when the Blue Jays capitalized on two consecutive turnovers by Swarthmore's
Kayla Moritzky. Senior Fatu Conteh intercepted a pass and drove in for a layup on the other end to put the visitors ahead before junior Maggie Fruhean put back a missed shot by Janay Smith to prompt a Garnet timeout with the Blue Jays ahead by a 46-43 score.
Larsen was able to tie the game at 46s by converting a 3-point play the old-fashioned way shortly before the midway point, but the Blue Jays would shake it off and take the lead for good when Conteh hit two shots at the charity stripe on the visitor's next possession. The lead grew to as many as 14 until Lytle hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds on the clock to seal the final outcome.
Swarthmore was led by Larsen and Lytle in the losing effort. Larsen accumulated a game-high 22 points to go along with six boards and three blocks, while Lytle finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Conteh paced Johns Hopkins (6-2, CC 5-0) with a 19-point, seven-rebound effort. She also had three assists and three swipes. Stacy Fairey and Clark finished with 10 points apiece.
