Widener Defeats Women’s Basketball in 320 Challenge Matchup

Box Score CHESTER, Pa. – Senior Katie Lytle registered her fourth double-double of the season and classmate Kayla Mortizky matched two career highs for assists and boards, but the Swarthmore College women's basketball team fell by a 78-60 score to Widener in a 320 Challenge matchup on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at the Schwartz Center.

Widener (4-3) scored on its first possession by getting a 3-pointer from senior Jen Egee and led from wire-to-wire. The Pride extended their lead to double figures at the 16:22 mark when junior Courtney Colella converted a layup to make it 12-2 and were ahead by as many as 19 in the frame. Sophomore Isabella Bellezza closed out the half by canning a trifecta after receiving a pass from junior Elle Larsen to make it 44-28 at the midway point.

The Pride kept the Garnet off the scoreboard for more than three minutes to start the second half until Bellezza made another trey off a feed from Larsen at the 16:42 to mark. Swarthmore was able to bring the deficit down to 12 on two occasions, but that was as close as the visitors would come the rest of the way. Widener kept its double-digit lead throughout the second half and rode a career outing from Egee to come away with the 18-point win.

Lytle led Swarthmore by registering 23 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort. Larsen had 12 points and seven boards, while Moritzky matched two career marks with 11 assists and eight rebounds.

Widener was paced by Egee, who netted a career-high 29 points by shooting 10-for-17 from the field, including 6-for-10 from long range, as well as 3-for-5 from the stripe. Colella finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Swarthmore (4-5) will take a break for final exams and will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 2 when it visits Cal Tech at 4:00 p.m. PST.
