Joe Keedy registered a double-double to lead the Swarthmore College men's basketball team to a 72-57 triumph over Bryn Athyn on Saturday, Nov. 30 at the Asplundh Field House. The Garnet ended the weekend riding a three-game winning streak.
After Keedy opened up the contest by sinking a free throw, Bryn Athyn burst out to an 8-2 lead. Stephen Johnson accounted for all of the scoring for the Lions during the stretch.
Swarthmore, however, chipped away at the deficit and ended the half on a 17-1 run to seize control. Keedy hit a field goal to start the run before a Barkley trifecta made it 21-20 to to give the Garnet their first lead since the beginning of the game with 7:52 left. Freshman
Chris Bourne capped the scoring with a layup to give the Garnet a commanding 34-21 lead at the break.
The Garnet extended their lead to 15 points by getting a layup from Keedy early in the second half, but the Lions roared back and slashed the Garnet lead down to five at 42-37 with 11:25 left to play. Freshman Adonis Rosario closed the 11-1 run with a trifecta.
But five points was as close as the Lions would come the rest of the way, as senior
Jay Kober answered with a layup and Barkley later nailed two consecutive shots from beyond the arc to balloon the Garnet advantage to 20 at 68-48 with just 3:10 remaining in regulation. Bourne, senior David Ancona and freshman
Tom Wilmots all hit shots at the line before time expired.
Barkley scored his game-high 23 points by shooting 8-for-10 from the field, including 7-for-8 from long range, to pace the Garnet. Keedy notched a double-double after contributing 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Bourne and Kober also finished in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Bryn Athyn (0-5) was led by sophomore Christian Rivera and freshman Deion Boyer. Rivera had 14 points and seven boards, and Boyer scored 11 points to go along with four assists.
