Ursinus Deals Women’s Basketball a 70-64 Loss; Larsen and Lechich Post Career Marks

Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior Elle Larsen recorded her second double-double and set a career rebounding mark, but the Swarthmore College women's basketball team was dealt a 70-64 loss to Ursinus on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at Tarble Pavilion.

After blocking a shot at the other end, Larsen put Swarthmore on the board first by finishing a pass from senior Katie Lytle. Ursinus, however, answered with eight straight points and would hold on to its lead for the rest of the game.

The Bears would move ahead by as many as 12 points in the opening half before the Garnet trimmed the deficit down to seven at the break. Senior Kayla Moritzky corralled an offensive rebound and finished a 3-point play the old-fashioned way by converting a layup and making the ensuing free throw to make it 36-29 at the recess.

Even though the Garnet gained some momentum at the end of the first half, Ursinus (3-2, CC 2-1) came out the locker room hot and opened the second frame on an 8-2 run. Sophomore Alyssa Polimeni then hit a jumper to create a 50-35 score before canning consecutive shots from downtown to put the Bears in full control with a 56-38 cushion to work with at the 12:11 mark.

But Swarthmore (2-3, CC 0-3) did not go down without a fight and started chipping away at the large deficit for the remainder of regulation. Larsen netted five consecutive points before senior Stephanie Lechich hit a trey to bring the gap down to 10 with 9:24 on the clock. The Garnet made it a five-point game twice and then a one-possession game at 67-64 when Lytle hit two free throws with just 18 seconds remaining. Ursinus, however, made free throws on the other end to escape with the win.

Swarthmore was led by Larsen and Lechich in the losing effort. Larsen finished with 23 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, while Lechich finished with a career-best 14 points off the bench. Moritzsky had another solid all-around performance with eight points, eight boards and five assists.

Ursinus was paced by Polimeni, who led four Bears in double figures with 16 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field. Senior Diamond Lewis and freshman Libby Lannon netted 13 points apiece, while Lewis also had a game-high six assists.

Swarthmore will return to action when it visits Bryn Mawr for a non-conference game on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.
