COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - With five players in double-digits, the Swarthmore College (2-3, 2-0 CC) men's basketball team clipped on target all night to earn it's second straight Centennial Conference victory. The Garnet defeated Ursinus College on the road by a 91-86 score on Tuesday evening.
Shooting well over 50 percent across the court - including 10-for-19 on long balls - Swarthmore arrived to Helfferich Hall on a roll. Junior Karl Barkley led with 19 points, freshmen Chris Bourne and Sam Lebryk off the bench clipped 17, while senior Jay Kober and sophomore Seth Liebert combined for 27 points in the victory. Bourne collected eight boards, two blocks and one steal in the effort.
Ursinus (1-3, 0-2 CC) put the first points up on a three from Hanif Sutton, but a coast-to-coast layup from Karl Barkley and two from Chris Bourne tied the game at 6-all at 16:44. A long three from Trevor Norton knotted the game at 11 at 14:33 before the Garnet opened fire with a 11-0 run - Kober led with six points.
Off the bench, Lebryk went 3-for-4 from downtown in the first and went on an eight point clip to put the Garnet up 33-17 with 6:06 to play. Beating the Bears defense down the floor, Lebryk took a long pass from Cheney to extend the lead to 44-20 at 2:07. Although the Bears found the offensive boards, the offense couldn't finish on the second chances. Coming out hot on both ends of the court in the opening 20 minutes, Swarthmore went into the break with a 47-24 lead.
The halftime chat proved effective for the Bears as the home team came out roaring, but Swarthmore still held a 13-point lead with 13:14 to play, 56-43. Ursinus' surge continued with back-to-back layups from Steve Leonard followed by two points from Trey Harry to shrink gap to five points, 56-51, with 10:43 to play.
Tighten the strings on the defense, Swarthmore was limited to just eight points in the opening 10 minutes of the second. An offensive rebound and drawn foul from the Bears' Malik Draper at 6:12 opened the door for Ursinus to come within two points - Draper hit both at the line - score set at 64-62 Swarthmore. The Garnet responded with a three from Barkley and back-to-back jumpers from Bourne and Liebert for a ten point lead - Swarthmore kept a double-digit lead until the final 44 seconds of play to clinch the 91-86 victory.
The Bears were led by Norton with 26 points, Pat Vasturia with 14 and Trey Harry with eight boards and three steals.
Swarthmore will return to action on Saturday, November 30 at Bryn Athyn. Tip off is set for 3:00 p.m.
