Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Freshman
Chris Bourne scored a career-high 20 points by shooting 10-for-13 from the field, but the Swarthmore College men's basketball team fell to Kean by a 69-59 score on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at Tarble Pavilion.
Kean (1-0) raced to a 7-0 lead and forced Swarthmore to burn a quick timeout at the 16:19 mark after sophomore Tommy Souilas finished a fastbreak layup. Senior
Joe Keedy finally got the Garnet on the board by sinking two free throws less than a minute later, but the Cougars responded by getting a 3-point play the old-fashioned way from Souilas to go up 10-2.
Swarthmore chipped away at the deficit, tying the match at 10s on a 3-pointer by freshman
Luke McCartin before taking its first lead at 13-12 on another McCartin trey. But the lead was short lived, as Souilas stayed hot and made a jumper on the other end to put the visitors ahead for good. The Cougars ballooned their lead to as many as 18 points courtesy of a Mike Summerer layup before taking a 38-25 advantage into the recess.
The Garnet attempted to rally throughout the second half and came within five on two occasions when sophomore
Seth Liebert nailed a shot from downtown to create a 60-55 score with 6:12 remaining and on a Bourne layup that made it a 62-57 score with 4:37 on the clock. But that was as close as the Garnet would come the rest of the way, as junior Tim Steward answered with a 3-pointer to give the Cougars enough of a cushion to work with for the remainder of the game.
In addition to scoring 20 points, Bourne also finished with five rebounds and one steal to pace the Garnet. McCartin and Keedy contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench in the losing effort, while Keedy also had eight rebounds to finish just shy of a double-double. Senior
Jay Kober, who scored two points by shooting 2-for-4 from the stripe, ended the evening with 999 career points.
Kean was led by Souilas, who netted a game-high 24 points and also ended the game with four rebounds and two steals. Senior Ali Mix had 22 points and four steals, while classmate Xavier Fuller also scored in double figures by posting 11 points to go along with seven boards.
Swarthmore (0-3) will open up Centennial Conference play when it hosts Gettysburg on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m.
