Katie Lytle reached the 1,000-point milestone in leading the Swarthmore College women's basketball team to a 58-55 victory over Connecticut College in the championship game of the Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 17 at Tarble Pavilion.
Connecticut College (1-1) was in full control early by rattling off 11 unanswered points to start the game while forcing Swarthmore to miss its first 15 field goals attempts. After sophomore
Jessica Jowdy netted the first Garnet field goal to make it 14-5 at the 12:45 mark to break the streak of cold shooting, the Garnet offense started to come alive and began chipping away at the deficit. Swarthmore ended the half on a 12-0 run and took its first lead when Lytle hit a buzzer-beating jumper to make it 28-26 at the break.
The second half was a seesaw battle that featured seven ties and six lead changes. Swarthmore and Connecticut College each played a one-possession game until sophomore
Isabella Bellezza canned a trifecta for the hosts to create a 39-35 score. Lytle made it 44-37 with 12:04 to play, but the Camels came right back and scored 10 straight to go ahead 48-44.
Swarthmore, however, came right back and regained a lead they would never relinquish when Lytle took a pass from senior
Kayla Moritzky and completed a 3-point play the old-fashioned way to make it 49-48. With 1:57 left, Moritzky hit a 3-pointer to break a 53-all tie, and Lytle sealed the final outcome by making a layup.
Lytle led Swarthmore with 29 points, 14 rebounds and five steals in the contest. She was also named the most outstanding player of the tournament after averaging 22 points and 16.5 rebounds in the two Garnet victories and now has 1,011 points in her career. Moritzky joined Lytle on the all-tournament squad after finishing the title game with seven points to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Jowdy fell just shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Senior Caitlin Cimino, who was named to the all-tournament team, paced the Camels in the losing effort. She finished the game with eight points and 13 rebounds. Senior Tara Gabelman and freshman Liz Malman registered 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Gabelman also had nine boards.
