Men’s Basketball Concludes Equinox Classic Play With 60-51 Setback Against Ithaca

Box Score HAVERFORD, Pa. - Despite dominant double-digit scoring efforts from senior Jay Kober and freshman Chris Bourne, the Swarthmore College men's basketball team came up short and fell by a 60-51 to Ithaca College (1-1) on Saturday, Nov. 16 in its final matchup of 22nd Annual Equinox Classic at Haverford College.

For the second game in row, Kober and Bourne led the Garnet in scoring. Kober finished with a team-high 14 points to along with four rebounds, while Bourne kept pace with 13 points and five rebounds.

The Bombers were paced by freshman Frank Mitchell who registered a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. He also added one block and one assist.

The first period of play featured six ties and five dramatic exchanges of the lead with the Garnet rising early to claim an 8-3 advantage less than three minutes into the game. After a number of back-and-forth exchanges, the Garnet were behind heading into the locker room down a by six with the score line at 33-27. Ithaca received a strong boost from Mitchell, who scored 17 first-half points.

The Garnet trailed throughout the entire second half but kept within reach of the Bombers. With just 3:50 left to play, Bourne finished a layup that cut the Ithaca lead down to five points at 51-46. Even though the Garnet forced a missed shot on the ensuing possession, Mitchell cleaned up the offensive rebound and decisively put his team up by seven. A resilient Ithaca squad would keep Swarthmore at bay for the remainder of regulation in dealing the Garnet the loss.

Swarthmore (0-2) will return home to face Kean on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.

GAME NOTES: Senior Jay Kober moved to within three points (997) of reaching the 1000-point scoring milestone. He will have the opportunity to become the 19th Garnet men's basketball player to achieve the feat at Tarble Pavilion on Tuesday night.
