Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Freshman
Chris Bourne recorded a double-double in his first collegiate game, but the Swarthmore College men's basketball team suffered an 88-82 overtime loss to Oglethorpe in the season opener for both schools on Friday, Nov. 15 at Tarble Pavilion as part of the 22nd Annual Equinox Classic.
Swarthmore took its first lead of the second half when junior
Karl Barkley drained a 3-pointer with 9:50 on the clock to make it 51-50. After sophomore guard Drew Patrick made one of two free throws to tie the score for the fourth time, the Garnet then embarked on a 9-2 run and took a 60-53 lead on another Barkley trifecta at the 7:23 mark.
Oglethorpe (1-0), however, chipped away at the deficit and was able to tie the score at 62s with under five minutes left on a pair of free throws from Jordan Kinney to help set up a photo finish. Trailing by four with two minutes remaining, the Stormy Petrels got layups from Alex Davis and Patrick to eventually force overtime.
The extra session turned out to be a seesaw battle with three lead changes and one tie. Oglethorpe took its first lead since the 9:50 mark of the second half when senior Tyler Courson sank two free throws with 4:11 on the clock, but Barkley stayed hot from beyond the arc and was able to sink another three to put the Garnet ahead again before senior
Joe Keedy sank a shot from the stripe to make it 75-73.
Although the Garnet seized the momentum, the Stormy Perels were able to answer back again and rattled off eight unanswered to take the lead for good. Swarthmore came within five until freshman Romello Bates hit a clutch free throw in the waning seconds to seal the final outcome.
Bourne registered 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead way for Swarthmore. Senior
Jay Kober and Barkley netted 17 points apiece, while Barkley also grabbed nine boards. Keedy added 12 points and three rebounds off the bench.
Oglethorpe was paced by Courson, who led four players in double figures with 26 points to go along with six rebounds. Victor Rohlfs had 21 points and also finished with two blocks.
Swarthmore (0-1) will conclude tournament play when it travels to Haverford to face Ithaca on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m.
