Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sophomore
Alec McClean and senior
Jack Momeyer each found the back of the net as the #24 Swarthmore men's soccer team rallied to defeat #13 Dickinson, 2-1, in a battle for Centennial Conference supremacy on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Clothier Field. The Garnet remained in first place at the end of the evening with three conference matches remaining.
Dickinson (10-3-1, CC 3-2-1) was able to get on the scoreboard just 2:36 into the match. Derek Kachadurian took a cleared ball from the defense at midfield and evaded several Garnet defenders before beating senior goalkeeper
Peter Maxted on a breakaway to put the Red Devils ahead early.
Swarthmore, however, was eventually able to respond with the equalizer at the midway point of the opening half when sophomore defender
Alec McClean found the back of the net. After Red Devil goalkeeper Jeremy Palcan tipped the ball off the crossbar, McClean hammered the ball home through a scrum of players for both teams to knot the score heading into the break.
In the second half, the Garnet were able to complete the rally in the 72nd minute.
Chris Lynn came down the right side and sent a dangerous cross into the box that was deflected by Palcan with
Joe Keedy in his sight. Momeyer, a team captain, then took the rebound and scored on the open net. Dickinson had several opportunities to at least force overtime, which included earning six corner kicks in the second half, but the Swarthmore defense held its ground to allow the Garnet to escape with the win.
Maxted made three saves on eight opportunities in the winning effort for Swarthmore. The Garnet's back line consisting of
Geli Carabases,
Michael Superdock,
Jake Weiner and McClean also ended the night allowing one goal or less for the 12th straight match. Dickinson's Palcan suffered the loss after making one save on 11 chances.
Swarthmore (8-2-4, CC 4-0-2) will play its final home match of the regular season when it hosts Washington College on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
