Box Score ASTON, Pa. – The 14th-ranked Swarthmore College men's soccer team fell to Neumann by a 1-0 decision in non-conference action on Monday, Oct. 14 at the Turf Field. The Garnet dropped their second straight match despite holding a commanding 17-4 advantage in total shots.
Swarthmore outplayed the Knights for most of the opening half and had numerous chances to get on the board first. Neumann (9-3-2), however, was able to score the only goal of the frame when Brooks Skyers converted a penalty kick in the 40th minute.
The Garnet continued to send a barrage of shots at Neumann goalkeeper Alex Lacko in the second half.
Ryan Meuth had the first major opportunity when he unleashed a rocket from the top of the box that was headed to the far right post, but Lacko made a diving save at the last moment to force a corner kick in the 54th minute. With just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the senior keeper also turned away a bullet sent in by
Michael Stewart.
Shortly after
Tyler Zon was able to pick up a ball that Tben Donnie hit off the left post in an attempt to double the Knights lead, the Garnet had several more opportunities on free kicks to net the equalizer. But Stewart had two shots blocked by a Knight wall of defenders, and Stewart had another attempt on the cage saved by Lacko. Stewart's final chance with the ball inside the box was cleared away by a Knight defender before the final horn sounded.
Neumann's Lacko picked up the victory between the pipes by turning away five of the 17 shots he faced, while Zon got the start for Swarthmore and did not make a save.
Swarthmore (6-2-4) returns to Centennial Conference action when it visits McDaniel on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m.
