SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Four players reached double-figures, but it wasn't enough for the Swarthmore College men's basketball team (5-14, 4-8), as red-hot Gettysburg shot 65 percent from the field en route to a 77-69 win over the Garnet on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Will Gates led all scorers with 23 points. Junior Jay Kober finished with 15 points - 13 of which came in the second half - Joe Keedy added 14 points and sophomore Karl Barkley had 11 points. Junior Jordan Federer recorded a game-high seven assists.

Big man Ben Constable led the Bullets (11-8, 7-5) with 21 points while Alex Zurn added 20 points to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

The game got off to a blazing start. In the first four minutes of the game, it was as if a three-point shooting contest broke out, as the teams combined for seven triples in eight attempts. Swarthmore buried four triples during that run - including two from Barkley - to jump out to a 14-9 lead.

Following the opening five minutes,  the Garnet's shooting cooled off significantly while the Bullets remained hot. Led by a strong effort from Constable in the post, Gettysburg built a 31-22 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the half. Swarthmore battled back, using a combined eight points from Gates and Keedy to trim the Bullets' lead to 36-30 at the half.

The Garnet came out of the break on fire. After the Bullets netted the opening bucket of the half, Swarthmore rattled off a 9-1 run, as a lay-up from Federer tied the game 39-39 with 17:11 to go.

Still, Swarthmore could not keep pace with a Bullets' squad that shot 67 percent in the second half. Gettysburg began to pull away midway through the second half, as a tomahawk dunk from Zurn on a fast break highlighted an 11-4 Gettysburg run that pushed the Bullets' lead to 50-43 with just under 12 minutes to play.

Follwing a backdoor lay-up from Sango Amolo, the Bullets' lead expanded to 68-57 with just 2:42 remaining to play and the game appeared to be over; however, Swarthmore had other plans. 

An and-one play from Gates and three-pointer from Barkley gave the Garnet new life, cutting the Gettysburg lead to 72-65 with 44 seconds to play. A pair of Kober free-throws 23 seconds later cut the lead to 73-67 before things got really interesting.

On the ensuing inbound pass, the Garnet defense forced a five-second violation on Gettysburg, giving  the ball back to Swat down six with 20 seconds to play. Four seconds later, Barkley drilled a jumper on the left wing - his foot just barely on the three-point line - to make it a 73-69 game.

But the Garnet would get no closer. Zurn hit a pair of free throws during the Bullets' next possesion, and Barkley's final three-point attempt rimmed out to seal the Gettysburg win.

Swarthmore returns to action on Wednesday at home against Muhlenberg. Play is set to begin at 8:00 p.m.
