Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sophomore Elle Larsen – who finished with a career-high 23 points - drove to the basket in the final ticks, but the ball rolled off the back rim as the Swarthmore College women's basketball team fell to Gettysburg College 55-54 on Saturday afternoon.
With less than 10 seconds remaining, the Bullets' Jessica Porter sent a crisp pass through the Garnet defense to Alyssa Isler who finished with the open layup for Gettysburg's (13-5, 10-3) game-winner. Swarthmore (15-3, 11-2) had 7.8 seconds to work with, but Larsen's finally push to the basket fell short as the Garnet suffered its second conference loss.
A battle between the top two teams in the Centennial Conference did not disappoint, as both teams played point-for-point down the final 10 minutes of the game and with no lead being safe all day long.
Larsen led the Garnet with a career-high 23 points as she shot a season-high 69.2 percent (9-for-13) from the field and went 5-for-6 on the line. She gave the Garnet the lead late in the game with a tough and-one bucket with 26 seconds left to play, putting the Garnet on top 54-53 and seemingly in position for the win.
Junior Katie Lytle secured her seventh consecutive double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Lytle finished 6-for-6 at the line and swiped a game-high five steals.
Cori Younghans tallied 16 points for the Bullets and Caroline Murphy added 10 points and seven rebounds in the winning effort. Porter grabbed 10 rebounds and handed-out a game-high five assists.
Swarthmore took an early 6-0 lead as Gettysburg opened the game flat and plagued with poor shooting, missing the opening four shots. The Bullets finally got on the board at 15:50, however the Garnet responded with a three-pointer from Elizabeth Casey and a pair of free throws from Lytle to go ahead 11-2 with under 14 minutes to play in the first.
Emily Duggan closed out the first half with two jumpers – including the go-ahead with two seconds remaining - to put the Bullets ahead 25-24 heading into the break.
Other than a six-point lead midway through the second half for Gettysburg, the teams played a closely-scored game for the final 20 minutes of action.
The box score mirrored similar statistics for both teams with Gettysburg having a slight edge in shooting at 29.4 percent on the day, while the Garnet finished at 29 percent. Swarthmore shot a season-best 91.7 percent at the charity stripe (11-for-12) and had a 12-7 edge in steals.
