SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Senior Will Gates hit back rim on a potential game-tying three-pointer in the waning seconds of regulation, as the Swarthmore College men's basketball team (3-12, 2-6) fought hard but ultimately fell to Dickinson (12-4, 6-2) by a score of 65-61 on Saturday afternoon from Tarble Pavilion.

Junior Jay Kober led the Garnet with a team-high 16 points, while junior Joe Keedy finished just one rebound shy of a double-double (11 points, nine rebounds). Freshman Ethan Lee had a strong all-around game, scoring 12 points and pulling down six rebounds.

The Red Devils were led by big man Steve Collins, who came off the bench to score a game-high 21 points. Chris Barsanti added 17.

A tight contest throughout, Dickinson left the door wide open for a Garnet comeback down the stretch. Thanks to a solid defensive effort from Swat, the Red Devils made just one field goal in the final seven minutes of regulation.

Despite the cold stretch on the offensive end, Dickinson maintained a 63-57 lead entering the final minute of play. After two made free throws from Swarthmore's Jordan Federer cut the lead to 63-59 with 47 seconds to play, the Red Devils went to the foul line with a chance to ice the game. Dickinson - despite sending high-percentage free-throw shooters to line - proceeded to miss the front end of three consecutive one-and-one attempts to keep the Garnet in the game. Swarthmore finally made the most of its golden opportunity when Lee was able to score following an offensive rebound to make it a 63-61 game with 29 seconds to go.

On the ensuing Red Devils' inbound pass, sophomore Karl Barkley appeared to intercept the pass and throw it off a Dickinson player while falling out of bounds, but the referee determined that his foot was on the end line, giving the ball back to the Red Devils.

Back at the free throw line with 13 seconds to play, Tucker Landy finally hit a free throw to stop the Red Devils' bleeding, but came up short on the second attempt, giving the Garnet the ball down 64-61 and 10 seconds to play.

After a Garnet timeout, a play was run for Gates, who caught the ball on the left wing with a chance to tie. His three-point attempt was on target but went deep, and Dickinson was able to pull down the rebound. With under one second to play, Adam Hoing hit one of two foul shots to finish off the 65-61 Dickinson win.

The Garnet jumped out to the early lead. Following a three-pointer from Kober at the 11:37 mark, Swarthmore took its largest lead of the game at 22-16. Dickinson responded with a 10-0 run midway through the first half - with eight consecutive points coming from Barsanti - to jump in front. Thanks to its 64 percent first-half shooting percentage, the Red Devils held a 40-35 lead at the half.

For the game, Dickinson shot 51 percent from the field compared to 37 percent for the Garnet.

Swarthmore dominated the glass, out-rebounding Dickinson 39-29 and finishing with 22 second-chance points off 16 offensive rebounds.

The Garnet returns to action on Wednesday at McDaniel. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
