Men's Track & Field Competes at the Gotham Cup

NEW YORK - The Swarthmore College men's track and field team opened the new year with its first trip to the Armory, competing in the NYC Gotham Cup on Saturday.

On the track, Jason Heo crossed the line at 7.48 followed by Matthew Heck at 7.53 and Tim Vaughan-Ogunlusi at 7.60 in the 60-meter dash event. All three times fall on the program's top-ten list, while Heo bettered his time of earlier this season by two seconds as a program-best mark in the event. Heo, competing in the 60-meter hurdles as well, finished at 9.55 for another top-five program mark.

In the 3,000-meter run, Jacob Phillips also bettered his best time of last season, finishing at 8:52.01 for 20th place overall. His finish in the 3,000 is the ninth-best mark in the program. Also in the 3,000, Spencer Friske clocked in at 9:08.20 followed by Alec Toro at 9:55.23.

In the relay events, Swarthmore had strong finishes in the 4x800 (8:12.17) and distance medley (11:00.45). The legs of Paul Green Richard Scott, Erick White and Dominic Castro-Wehr gave the Garnet a seventh place finish in the 4x800, while Jonas Oppenheimer, Aidan DuMont-McCaffrey and Dan Kalamarides paced the eighth place finish in the distance medley relay.

In the field, Travis Mattingly competed in the triple jump event, leaping to his best total of 39 feet and 10.75 inches for 31st overall.

The Garnet will return to the Armory Saturday, January 19th for the NYU Team Challenge.
