Women's Basketball Thrashes the Green Terror, 56-42

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Katie Lytle finished with 19 points and 17 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season to power the Swarthmore College women's basketball team past McDaniel College, 56-42, in Centennial Conference action Thursday night.

Lytle – a leader in the second half with nine points and 10 rebounds – put in an all-around effort in the Swarthmore (10-2, 6-1 CC) victory notching two blocks, two steals and one assist to go along with her double-double performance.

Madeline Ross pushed the Garnet in the first half with 10 points (4-for-5), three steals and two assists. Elle Larsen finished with eight points and nine rebounds and blocked a season-high three shots in the winning effort.

Rachael Rybak and Steph Perez each tallied 11 points for the Green Terror and combined for seven rebounds, while Shelby Taylor swiped a game-high five steals.

The Garnet controlled the game from start to finish by shooting a season-best 48 percent and coming down strong on the boards with a 42-28 advantage over McDaniel (5-7, 2-6 CC). The Green Terror met its demise with poor accuracy (19-for-63) and bad luck on the boards.

Swarthmore got on board first with a jumper from Ross en route to holding the lead entire 40 minutes of action. McDaniel managed just eight points in the opening ten minutes, as the Garnet jumped ahead to a 23-8 lead. Elizabeth Casey gave the Garnet its largest lead of the first half, 27-11, on a jumper at 4:18. Casey later converted on a three-point opportunity after being fouled, contributing five points in the winning effort.

Lytle closed out the scoring with a layup to put Swarthmore in front 34-19 at halftime – which looked quite similar to the intermission score of exactly one year ago between these two teams with Swarthmore leading 38-18 at the break.

McDaniel looked to make a comeback in the opening ten minutes of the second half, collecting on a 6-0 run that brought the scoring margin below double-digits at the 13:06 mark. Rybak hit back-to-back jumpers during the spark, but it was short lived as the Garnet responded back with a 9-0 run to show 49-30 on the scoreboard with 8:24 remaining.

From there on out the Garnet was on cruise control, collecting its sixth Centennial victory on the season with a final score of 56-42 at the Gill Center.

Swarthmore returns to action this Saturday at Tarble Pavilion against conference foe Dickinson College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
