SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Despite out-shooting visiting Widener 24-4 and dominating much of the play, the Swarthmore College women's soccer team (1-2) found itself on the wrong end of the scoreline, falling to the Pride by a score of 1-0 (OT) on Wednesday evening from Clothier Field Stadium.

Kelly Buckley won it for Widener (1-0) with her golden goal in the 96th minute of play. The Pride -- which had not recorded a shot for over 50 minutes up to that point -- used the counterattack to set up Buckley, whose bending blast from distance sailed into the upper-righthand corner, just past the out-stretched arms of Garnet goalkeeper Katie Sipiora.

The Garnet offense did everything but put the ball into the back of the net, particularly in the first half when it recorded nine shots on goal. The Garnet came painstakingly close to scoring on several occasions during the first half -- including multiple shots hitting the post and  a team save from the Widener defense -- but could never finish the deal. The Garnet was also stymied by Pride goalkeeper Valarie Perretti, who finished the match with an impressive 11 saves.

Swat's first great chance came in the 11th minute of play, when freshman Melissa Trofa's close-range shot was initially saved by Perretti, then proceeded to hit the post and roll out of play. Thrirteen minutes later, the post would deny the Garnet once again, as sophomore Ellen Bachmanhuff's header off a corner kick drilled the iron.

The chances kept coming for Swarthmore as the half continued, but to no avail. In the 32nd minute, freshman Emily Gale's excellent strike was denied only by a diving save from Perretti. Three minutes later, it was more heartbreak for the Garnet offense, as freshman Amanda Bosworth's shot appeared headed for the back of the net until a Widener defender cleared it off the line to prevent the score.

In the second half, the Garnet attack slowed after an early flurry, registering just seven shots for the 45 minutes. Still, the defense was more than up to task, holding the Pride without a shot for the entire period. After a scoreless 90 minutes, the match headed into sudden death overtime, where the Pride made the most of its one scoring opportunity to pull off the surprising win.

Swarthmore's offense was let by junior Megan Brock, who took five shots (two on goal), and sophomore Emma Sindelar, who put three shots on goal out of six attempts.

In goal for the Garnet, freshman Reba Magier and Sipiora split time.

With the win, Widener takes a 1-0 lead in the 4th Annual 320 Challenge between Swarthmore and Widener.

Swarthmore returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Neumann. Play is set for 1:00 p.m.
