Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's soccer team (3-2, 1-0) opened up Centennial Conference play in style, using goals from freshman Melissa Trofa and sophomore Emma Sindelar to defeat homestanding Franklin & Marshall 2-0 on Saturday evening.
Sindelar also assisted on Trofa's first-half goal in the 17th minute to put the Garnet ahead 1-0. Sindelar added her own tally in the 48th minute with an assist from junior Megan Brock.
The victory marked the seventh consecutive season that Swarthmore has won its Centennial Conference opener.
It didn't take long for the Garnet offense to get into gear, as it scored on its very first shot of the contest. With the set-up coming from Sindelar, Trofa lofted a shot into the upper left corner of the goal to put Swarthmore ahead 1-0.
Sindelar almost made it 2-0 less than 90 seconds later, but her attempt was denied by F & M goalkeeper Amanda McGowan. Swat's offense continued to apply pressure throughout the remainder of the first half - firing off three more shots - but the score remained 1-0 heading into the half time break.
Following the break, the Garnet wasted no time putting the match on ice. On its very first shot of the second half, Swarthmore found the back of the net again, as Sindelar connected for her first goal of the 2012 season, making it 2-0.
From there, the Garnet defense took care of the rest. Swarthmore limited the Dips' offense to just one shot on target for the remainder of the contest, sealing the 2-0 victory.
The Garnet finished the match with a 10-7 edge in shots, 5-1 advantage in shots on goal and 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
In goal for the Garnet, freshman Reba Magier and junior Katie Sipiora split time to combine for the shutout.
Swarthmore continues Centennial Conference road play on Wednesday at Ursinus. Play is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
