HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men's indoor track and field team opened the season in the 2012 Jack Pyrah Invitiational hosted by Villanova University Saturday afternoon.
A handful of the Garnet team competed against athletes from Divisions I and III in the dynamic meet.
On the track, sophomore Jason Heo claimed fifth spot in the 60 meter hurdles, clocking at 9.65 to start the season. Still in the sprints, Tim Vaughan-Ogunlusi finished in 39.25 for the 300 dash, while Matthew Heck ran the 500 meter dash in 1:08.98.
In the distance events, Swarthmore lit up the 3,000 meter run with five finishers, including two top-ten times. Stuart Russell finished seventh in 9:01.89, while Dan Kalamarides clocked in at 9:09.73 for eighth place overall.
In the field, two Garnet competitors placed in the men's triple jump. Zach Kronstat leaped a best 11.86 meters (38' 11.00"), while Travis Mattingly finished at 11.53 meters (37' 10.00").
The Garnet will return to action after the holiday season, with its first trip of the season to the NYC Armory; competing in the NYC Gotham Cup on January 11th beginning at 1:00 p.m.
