Box Score ROSEMONT, Pa. - Down just one possession midway through the second half, the Swarthmore College men's basketball team (0-4, 0-1) could not keep pace with a high-energy Rosemont squad down the stretch, as the Ravens earned a 78-68 victory over the Garnet on Monday evening.
Junior Jay Kober led all scorers with 22 points. Junior Joe Keedy (pictured) made a seamless transition from the soccer pitch to the hardwood, scoring 13 points and pulling down six rebounds. Sophomore Matt Sharma recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while sophomore Karl Barkley added 11 points.
Five different players scored in double-digits for Rosemont (3-0), with Derrick Carter and Mitch Carsillo each finishing with 18 points.
Turnovers played a big part in the Ravens' victory; Rosemont forced 24 Garnet turnovers for the game on 14 steals. The Ravens were also proficient getting to the free-throw line, hitting 24-of-38 of free throws compared to just 14-of-21 for Swarthmore.
Following a back-and-forth first half, the Ravens entered the second half with a slim 36-31 advantage. Their lead swiftly ballooned to 12, as Rosemont scored the first seven points of the second half to go on top 43-31.
The Garnet finally got on the board in the second half with a lay-up from Sharma at the 17:17 mark, and used that bucket to spark a run of its own. Over the next seven minutes, Swarthmore outscored Rosemont 17-5, cutting the lead to just two points (48-46) on a Jordan Martinez lay-up with 10:18 to play. Six different players scored for the Garnet on the run.
Unfortunately for Swarthmore, the Ravens responded with a lightning-fast 16-4 run over just a three-minute span - sparked by three-consecutive three-pointers - to change the course of the once-close game. In the blink of an eye, the Ravens lead had blossomed to 14 points (64-50) with just 7:04 left to play.
Down the stretch, Rosemont took care of business and hung on for the 78-68 win.
Swarthmore returns to Centennial Conference action on Thursday with a trip to Muhlenberg. Action is slated to begin at 8:00 p.m.
