CARLISLE, Pa. - Career highs from sophomores Karl Barkley (20 points) and Dominic Rizzo (10 points) were not enough to lead the Swarthmore College men's basketball team (0-3, 0-1) to victory in its Centennial Conference opener, as the Garnet fell to homestanding Dickinson 68-53 on Tuesday evening.

Barkley led all scorers with 20 points, 12 of which came from behind the arc. Rizzo also led the Garnet with seven rebounds.

The Red Devils (3-0, 1-0) led wire-to-wire, propelled by a balanced scoring attack that saw four players reach double-figures. Tucker Landy led the way with 13 points, followed by 12 each from Chris Barsanti and Chris Cox.

The Red Devils made the most of Garnet miscues, turning Swarthmore's 15 turnovers into 22 points.

Dickinson - which was picked to finished second in the Centennial Conference preseason poll and is receiving votes in D3Hoops.com Top 25 poll -  took control of the game early, ruining any chance of a Garnet upset.

Keyed by a 14-2 run midway through the first half, the Red Devils found themselves ahead 30-14 with just five minutes remaining before the break. Thanks to buckets from Barkely, Rizzo and senior Jordan Martinez, Swarthmore was able to trim the deficit to single digits (35-26) heading into the halftime.

In the second half, the Garnet put up a fight but could not catch up to the Red Devils. Swarthmore got within eight points of the lead on two seperate ocassions early in the second half, but Dickinson was able to pull away down the stretch for the 15-point win.

Junior Jay Kober added eight points and five rebounds for the Garnet.

Swarthmore finished the game with a season-high eight three-pointers, six of which came from the duo of Barkley and Rizzo.

The Garnet take a break for Thanksgiving and return to action on Monday, November 26 at Rosemont. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
