NEWVILLE, Pa. - Led by senior Jacob Phillips, the Swarthmore College men's cross country team earned an eighth place finish at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional tournament on Saturday. Dickinson College hosted the 8K run at Big Spring High School.
Phillips, an All-Region selection with his performance, was the top Garnet finisher for the race and crossed the line in 15th with a time of 25:59.0. Sophomore Jonas Oppenheimer (43rd/26:38.3) followed Phillips, and behind Oppenheimer was junior Stuart Russell (66th), with a time of 27:04.5.
Rounding out the top five Swarthmore finishers were senior Aidan DuMont-McCaffrey (69th/27:06.8) and junior Dan Kalamarides (89th/27:25.0). The final runners contributing to the overall team score were junior Robert Fain (96th/27:33.9) and freshman Spencer Friske (130th/28:07.2).
The team's eighth place finish was out of a large field of 49 times. They finished with 276 points. Haverford claimed the regional championship with 63 points, followed by Carnegie Mellon (92 points), and Johns Hopkins (110 points).
With the finish, Phillips now awaits for an at-large spot into the NCAA Championships.
