Box Score SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Freshman Emily Gale contributed her first collegiate goal, the game-winning tally, to lift the Swarthmore College women's soccer (9-4) team over Lancaster Bible (12-4) by a score of 2-1 at Clothier Field Monday night, in non-conference play, during the first ever match between the two squads.
The opening ten minutes of play was quiet on both sides, as neither team produced any strong scoring opportunities. Emma Sindelar collected the first threat of the game in the 16th minute with a point-blank shot just inside the right corner of the penalty box, but a save halted the Garnet's initial attempt. Megan Brock and Amber Famigleietti each picked up a pair of shots on goal in the first, but the Chargers' keeper Emily Lloyd held Swarthmore at zero.
The first half ended at 0-0 with Swarthmore controlling the ball with a 14-1 shot advantage. Lloyd gathered six saves in the first half for Lancaster Bible.
The second stanza mirrored the first, with the Garnet maintaining momentum. Swarthmore finally connected on a shot with Amber Famiglietti's first goal of the season. Her goal started with her own corner attempt, with Famiglietti bringing the ball inside the eighteen and fired the shot that bounced off a defender for the tally. The Garnet lead didn't last long, as the Chargers connected just over a minute later on its second shot of the game with a goal from Whitney Heise to knot the match at one-all.
In a night of firsts, Emily Gale slipped a shot past Lloyd, as the ball fumbled out of the keeper's hands, to collect her first career goal in the 75th minute of play to give the Garnet its second lead of the night at 2-1.
The Chargers aimed to tie the game once again in at 85:23, but Caela Long dropped quickly to save the low shot in order maintain the Garnet lead.
Swarthmore held a 33-3 shot advantage in the match, while collected all nine corner attempts awarded in the game.
Lloyd made 12 saves for the Chargers in all 90:00 minutes of action. Katie Sipiora and Long split time between the pipes, with Long making the lone save for the Garnet.
Swarthmore will return to Centennial Conference play on Wednesday, October 17 with a trip to Muhlenberg. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
