GREENWOOD, Ind. – Swarthmore College's
Michael Melnikov was selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Men's Tennis First Team for the second straight year on Wednesday afternoon.
Melnikov becomes only the second student-athlete in department history to garner multiple Academic All-America First Team selections in a career, joining Michael Superdock (men's soccer) who earned the honors in 2013 and 2014. Melnikov is also just the sixth individual in Swarthmore history to receive multiple Academic All-America awards of any kind.
The Academic All-America program is the longest running and premier award for athletic and academic success across college sports.
Melnikov was the runner-up at this year's NCAA Singles Championship, becoming the first Garnet player to reach the national championship match since Swarthmore Hall of Famer Shep Davidson in 1985. He picked up his fourth career All-America honor in singles and was named the first four-time Centennial Conference Player of the Year in conference history. He compiled a 36-5 record in singles action, setting a new single-season mark for singles victories. Melnikov also went 16-12 in doubles play and his 52 total wins broke the single-season record. He was chosen the ITA Atlantic South Senior Player of the Year. The senior finishes his legendary tenure as a seven-time overall All-American and the all-time leader in total wins, singles wins, doubles wins, and wins at No. 1 singles.
