Mullan Announced as Member of 2026 MAC Hall of Fame Class

NEWTOWN, Pa. - The Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) announced Swarthmore College men's tennis coaching legend Michael Mullan as a member of the MAC Hall of Fame Class of 2026 on Wednesday. This year's Hall of Fame class, the 15th in conference history, features 10 inductees from current and former member institutions.

Mullan retired from coaching after 40 years in 2018, accumulating 441 career victories to become one of the most successful coaches in NCAA Division III history. He began coaching the Garnet in 1978 and immediately led Swarthmore to seven-straight MAC titles. Three years after taking over for the Garnet, Mullan captured his first of his three NCAA Division III Championships in 1981, followed by the second in 1985 and the third in 1990.

At the helm of the men's tennis program, Mullan's statistics and accolades speak for themselves. The Delaware County native led the Garnet to three national titles, seven MASCAC Championships, coached the 1985 NCAA Division III National Doubles Champions and produced 39 All-America selections.

Mullan was named the NCAA Division III Coach of the Year in 1986. He has since been inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Delco Chapter and the Swarthmore Athletics Hall of Fame. He was most recently honored with his induction into the prestigious ITA Men's Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame in 2025.

A graduate of Springfield High School, Mullan won two Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state high school championships and went on to play at the University of California, Berkeley under famed tennis coach Dr. Chet Murphy. Mullan also taught in the Sociology Department during his career at Swarthmore College. He holds Ph.D.s in sociology and history from Delaware and Temple.
