LANCASTER, Pa. – Fresh off a Centennial Championship, the Swarthmore College softball team had a program-record eight players selected to the All-Centennial Team on Thursday morning.
Lilly Goldberg was named the conference's Rookie of the Year.
Goldberg was also a member of the All-Centennial First Team alongside
Olivia McClammy. The All-Centennial Second Team included
Emily Bertrand,
Lia Fong, and
Iris Barone.
Lane Barron,
Avery McClure, and
Catherine Heflin received honorable mention.
McClammy has earned All-Centennial recognition in all four years of her historic career, twice on the first team. Barone has been honored three times while Bertrand, Barron, and McClure all picked up their second career award. In addition,
Sarah Schab was the Garnet's representative on the Centennial All-Sportsmanship Team.
Goldberg had a stellar rookie campaign that saw her produce a 17-4 record with a 1.07 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. She tossed 12 complete games with seven shutouts while walking just 21 and striking out 149 in 137.1 innings. Opponents hit just .195 against her. Goldberg ranked second in the conference in ERA, opposing batting average, innings pitched, strikeouts, and wins. She was selected the Centennial Pitcher of the Week three times.
McClammy batted .378 with a 1.129 OPS and broke several program records this year. She totaled 48 hits, 13 doubles, one triple, seven homers, 56 RBI, and 44 runs. In the Centennial, McClammy was first in RBI and doubles, second in home runs, third in slugging percentage (.652), OPS and walks (20), fourth in on base percentage (.470) and runs, and eighth in batting average and hits. She was a one-time Centennial Player of the Week.
Bertrand led Swarthmore in hitting with a .397 average. She tallied 54 hits, eight doubles, one home run, 35 RBI, and 13 runs. Bertrand ranked third in the conference in hits, fourth in batting average and RBI, and ninth in OPS (.935). The senior was tabbed the Centennial Player of the Week one time and was the Centennial Tournament MVP.
Fong produced a solid first season for the Garnet, batting .365 with 35 hits, 11 doubles, 20 RBI, and 10 runs. She tied for sixth in the conference in doubles. Fong also contributed in the pitching circle, going 3-0 with a 2.27 ERA and 0.81 WHIP over seven appearances. She hurled two complete games with one shutout with just six walks and 21 strikeouts in 24.2 innings. Fong was named the Centennial Pitcher of the Week one time.
Barone posted a .359 batting average and recorded 52 hits, six doubles, six triples, 17 RBI, and 47 runs. She ranked first in the conference in triples, second in stolen bases (26), third in runs, and fourth in hits. The junior's 47 runs this year is a program record.
Barron made 20 appearances in the pitching circle with 17 starts. She went 12-5 with a 2.31 ERA. The junior tossed eight complete games with one shutout. Barron struck out 73 hitters in 106.0 innings. In the Centennial, she was third in ERA and wins, fourth in innings pitched and strikeouts, and fifth in opposing batting average (.258).
McClure hit .405 with 32 hits, six doubles, one triple, 20 RBI, and 18 runs in 28 contests before suffering an injury. She registered eight multi-hit performances. McClure was chosen the Centennial Player of the Week one time.
Heflin batted .279 in her rookie season, producing 19 hits, five doubles, three home runs, 14 RBI, and 13 runs. She ranked eighth in the conference in home runs and totaled four multi-hit games.
Swarthmore has a 32-10 record and will begin NCAA Tournament play next week.
