CHESTER, Pa. - Atticus Hempel stole the spotlight on Friday night, setting a new program record in the outdoor 5000m run as the Swarthmore College men's track and field team kicked off the Danny Curran Invitational.
Hempel surpassed the longstanding record of 14:40.77, set by Garnet Hall of Famer Marc Jeuland in 2001. Despite battling injuries this season, the Swarthmore senior clocked in at 14:37.93, breaking the 24-year-old mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hempel ran towards the front of the pack for the majority of the 5000m run, while leading a couple laps late in the race. The senior crossed the finish line third overall with a program record of 14:37.93.
Robert Mirabello, who competed in the same heat, placed 16th overall at 15:02.37. The senior bested his outdoor personal record by 43 seconds.
- Jasper Mosley won the second heat to finish 26th overall in the 5000m run. The first-year posted a time of 15:16.00 in his 5k debut. Spencer Etheridge followed closely behind with a 15:28.56 finish, while Luka Opacic-Rodrigues ran a 15:44.70 to finish in the top half of the field.
