Men’s Swimming Shines in Milestone-Filled Swat Invite

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's swimming team wrapped up the regular season with its home Swat Invite on Friday and Saturday. 

In total, the men recorded 14 lifetime bests. Luke Magnuson and Jake Zarak both totaled four lifetime bests on the weekend, while Will Trone raced to three best swims. 

Ham Williams-Tracy and Lester Wessels moved into the top-10 all-time with individual swims. Williams-Tracy shot up the rankings to third in the 1000 freestyle, while Wessels climbed to ninth overall in the 200 backstroke.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
FRIDAY SESSION

- Magnuson and Zarak opened Friday's action with a pair of lifetime bests in the 50 freestyle. Magnuson posted a time of 21.39, while Zarak touched at 21.49. 

- Wessels recorded a season best in the 200 backstroke. The first-year touched at 1:54.29 to post the ninth-fastest mark in program history. 

- Trone raced to a lifetime best in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.38. Magnuson then closed out the session with a lifetime best in the 200 butterfly. The junior finished at 1:57.88 for his second lifetime-best swim of the session. 

SATURDAY MORNING SESSION
- Magnuson and Wessels finished within a tenth of a second in the 100 backstroke. Magnuson touched first at 52.04, while Wessels followed closely at 52.12. Magnuson raced to a lifetime best for the third time this meet. 

- Trone and Damian Rene battled to a tight finish in the 100 breaststroke. Trone claimed the top spot with a lifetime best of 58.54, while Rene touched at 59.15.  

- Williams-Tracy raced to a lifetime best in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:39.13. The swim ranked third all-time in program history. Theodore Kim fell just short of his lifetime best with a 9:55.20 finish. He currently ranks seventh all-time in the event. 

- Zarak enjoyed a lifetime best in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.77. Rene followed behind with a season best of 1:47.74. 

SATURDAY NIGHT SESSION
- Magnuson continued to add to his outstanding weekend with a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly. The junior beat out a pair of Lehigh competitors with a time of 49.99. Magnuson fell just short of his lifetime best, which ranks sixth all-time in program history. Zarak (50.94) and Wessles (52.00) both swam to lifetime bests in the event. 

- Trone grabbed his third lifetime best of the meet with a time of 2:10.48 in the 200 breaststroke. 

- Rene achieved a college best with a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle. The sophomore beat out a pair of Lehigh challengers with a 47.22 effort. Magnuson raced to a season best in the event with a 47.77 mark.   

- The men achieved a number of milestone swims in the mixed 200 medley relay. Rene earned a lifetime best for his 50 breast split, Magnuson for his 50 fly split and Zarak for his 50 free split. Wessels also raced to a season-best split in the 50 back.

The Garnet chase their fourth-straight Centennial Conference Championship with the opening of the championships on Thursday, February 20 at Franklin & Marshall College.
