Men’s Swimming Draws Even with Gettysburg in Championship Opener

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's swimming team shares the top spot with Gettysburg College after the opening two events of the Centennial Championships on Thursday. Both programs totaled 106 points after splitting gold and silver medals to open the four-day meet. 

The 200 medley relay of Matvey Ivanov, Cole Griscavage, Cami Wilson and Danny Castle won the opening event with a conference record of 1:29.11. The Garnet repeated as champions in the event, while taking down the Bullets' conference record (1:29.70) from 2023. The quartet finished a few tenths of a second below the NCAA B cut. 

Swarthmore returned to the podium in the 800 freestyle relay with a second-place finish. Gettysburg grabbed gold in the event and won the consolation final to draw even with the Garnet. 


HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ivanov, Griscavage, Wilson and Castle started off the championships with a record-setting swim in the 200 medley relay. The team claimed gold in the event with a conference record of 1:29.11. Wilson took the lead for the Garnet in the butterfly leg, while Castle never looked back with an excellent closing finish in the freestyle. The team finished just below the NCAA B cut.

- The Garnet earned maximum points in the 200 medley relay with a victory in the consolation final. The team of Levi Tipton, Dylan Ling, Luke Magnuson and Ham Williams-Tracy touched the wall at 1:31.03 to secure a top finish in their heat. Overall, the group raced to the third fastest time. 

- Swarthmore finished the night with a silver medal in the 800 freestyle relay. The team of Castle, Benton Greenberg, Sam Peterson and Williams-Tracy touched at 6:45.69 to finish a couple seconds behind the Bullets. The Garnet also placed second behind Gettysburg in the consolation final. 

UP NEXT
The Garnet return to the pool tomorrow at 10:00 am for the morning session of the Centennial Conference Championships. The team will look to add to its medal count in the night session at 6:00 pm.
