Women's Soccer Advances to UChicago for NCAA Sectionals, Will Battle Carleton in Round of 16

INDIANAPOLIS - The No. 13 Swarthmore College women's soccer team will compete in the sectionals of the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third time in program history, and first since 2018, this weekend. The Garnet will travel to the University of Chicago and face Carleton College in the Round of 16 on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Eastern.

In the other Saturday matchup, the host Maroons will take on California Lutheran University at 12 p.m. Eastern. The two winners on Saturday will meet for the quarterfinals on Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern with a spot in the national semifinals on the line.

Swarthmore (15-3-4) advanced out of the Case Western Reserve regional, opening the tournament with a comeback 4-2 win against Bridgewater College. In the second round, the Garnet battled the host Spartans to a 1-1 draw, overcoming an injury to their starting goalkeeper and a red card that forced Swarthmore to play short for the final 58 seconds of regulation and all of overtime. The Garnet then dominated the penalty kick shootout, 3-0, to earn their spot in the final 16.

UChicago (14-2-3) plays host for the second straight weekend as the Maroons moved on with victories over University of Wisconsin-Superior, 5-0, and University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, 3-1. They are making their 23rd tournament appearance, having finished as the national runner-up twice. UChicago finished fourth in the NCAA Power Index and is ranked seventh in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll.

Cal Lutheran (17-3-2) came out of the Trinity (Texas) regional, starting with a first-round shutout of McMurry University, 3-0. The Regals then pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory over the host Tigers to reach the Round of 16. It is the 18th trip to the NCAA Tournament for Cal Lutheran, who won the national championship in 2023. The Regals are currently ranked 17th by United Soccer Coaches.

Carleton (18-2-2) posted a pair of shutouts to win the Lake Forest regional, downing John Carroll University, 1-0, before dispatching the host Foresters, 2-0. It is the sixth NCAA Tournament appearance for the Knights, who won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title this season.
