Karpenko, Freeman Three-Peat on Night Two of Centennial Championships

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The No. 21 Swarthmore College men's swimming team distanced themselves from the rest of the pack with five medals and three victories on a successful night two of the Centennial Conference Championships. 

Ben Freeman and Andrew Karpenko added to their championship legacy as they defended their third-consecutive conference titles. Freeman opened the meet with a successful championship defense in the 500 freestyle, while Karpenko followed with his third-straight gold in the 200 IM. Karpenko also swam a pool record in the event, while finishing below NCAA B cut mark. 

The Garnet captured another gold medal in the 400 medley relay. Karpenko earned his second gold medal of the night as a member of the relay. 



HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freeman captured his third-straight gold medal in the 500 freestyle. The senior beat out a Gettysburg challenger with a time of 4:32.84 to win by a full second. Ham Williams-Tracy also swam in the qualifying heat with a time of 4:35.97 to earn seventh, while Sam Peterson was victorious in the B Final with a 4:40.01 effort to sweep both races for the Garnet. 

- Karpenko and Danny Castle claimed the top-two finishes in the 200 IM. The senior narrowly beat out the rookie with a time of 1:49.97, while Castle touched the wall at 1:50.05. Both times broke the previous pool record and finished below the NCAA B cut. Karpenko captured gold in the event for the third-consecutive year as he became the first three-time champion since Swarthmore's Jeff Tse in 2019. Castle nearly caught the senior with a final split of 25.03, which marked the fastest lap of the race for all competitors. Ben Wesley also competed in the top final with a 1:51.56 effort to claim fifth overall. 

- Cami Wilson earned silver in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.46. The sophomore finished one tenth of a second behind the champion as he set a new Swarthmore program record. Ethan Marotte swam to a time of 20.94 to finish sixth in the top final,, while Cole Griscavage won the B Final with a 20.87 effort. 

- Swarthmore ended the night on a high note with a gold medal in the 400 medley relay. The team of Joey Lukner, Karpenko, Wilson and Castle placed first overall with a time of 3:18.16. The time bested the NCAA B cut mark, while registering as the second-fastest swim in program history. The team of Jacob Sherman, Dylan Ling, Marotte and Chhabra also excelled in the event with a fifth place finish of 3:24.03.

UP NEXT
The Garnet return to the pool tomorrow for the third day of the Centennial Conference Championships. The prelim session begins at 10 a.m. with the evening session scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
