Men’s Swimming Leads the Way after Centennial Championship Opening Night

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The No. 21 Swarthmore College men's swim team opened the Centennial Conference Championships with a gold and silver medal on Thursday night. The Garnet currently sit in first place after two events with a two-point lead over Franklin & Marshall College. 

The Garnet claimed gold in the 200 medley relay, while finishing as the runner-up in the 800 freestyle relay. Swarthmore also bested the NCAA B cut mark in the 800 freestyle relay. Danny Castle earned a pair of medals on the evening as a member of both podium finishers. 
 


HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore knocked off last year's defending champions in the 200 medley relay. The team of Castle, Cole Griscavage, Cami Wilson and Ben Wesley touched the wall first with a time of 1:30.69. Wilson took the lead for the Garnet on the final stretch of the butterfly before Wesley outswam his challengers in the freestyle to bring home gold for Swarthmore. The Garnet beat out second-place Franklin & Marshall (1:30.97) by a few tenths of a second. 

- The 800 freestyle relay of Ben Freeman, Ham Williams-Tracy, Sam Peterson and Castle earned silver in the final event of the evening. The quartet claimed a runner-up finish and bested the NCAA B cut time with a 6:41.47 mark. Swarthmore also took home first place in the B Relay as the team of Vijay Chhabra, Dylan Herink, Benton Greenberg and Griscavage touched the wall at 6:50.01 for the fourth fastest time overall.

UP NEXT
The Garnet return to the pool tomorrow for the second day of the Centennial Conference Championships. The prelim session begins at 10 a.m. with the evening session scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
