No. 21 Men’s Swimming Wraps Up Home Schedule with Swat Invite

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 21 Swarthmore College men's swim team wrapped up its home schedule with the Swarthmore Invitational on Saturday. The Garnet swimmers were joined by Franklin & Marshall College as competitors looked to end their seasons on a high note. 

In total, 11 Garnet swimmers combined for 28 lifetime bests, while eight swimmers totaled 18 season bests. Matvey Ivanov, Luke Magnuson, Mateo Smith, Will Kilponen and Theodore Kim all recorded top-10, all-time swims for the program. 

The team also celebrated Hayden Brown as he capped off his collegiate career for the Garnet with his final swim of the season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kilponen paced four Swarthmore swimmers in the 100 butterfly with a 50.49 effort. Fellow first-year Ivanov followed with a time of 51.11, while Mats McGrath (51.43) and Jake Zarak (51.68) rounded out the field. 

- Kim beat out a pair of Diplomat challengers for the top finish in the 400 IM. The first-year touched the wall at 4:17.99 to beat the nearest competitor by five seconds. Brown also swam the event with a finish of 4:24.53. 

- Damian Rene led a Swarthmore trio in the 100 breaststroke with a 58.57 finish. Will Trone (59.28) narrowly beat out Nick Zuk (59.88) to claim a runner-up finish. Rene and Trone both recorded lifetime bests in the event. 

- Magnuson beat out a pair of his teammates with a time of 1:43.48 in the 200 freestyle. Andrew Hendrickson then followed with a 1:44.02 mark, while Mateo Smith was a close third at 1:44.83. All three swimmers recorded lifetime bests in the event.

- Kilponen placed as the runner up in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.85 to lead the Garnet. Ivanov (51.88) and Mats McGrath (52.31) followed behind in third and fourth place, respectively. Ivanov earned a lifetime best in the event, while combining for four total this weekend. 

- Trone earned the top spot in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:11.11. Earlier in the session, he also swam a lifetime best of 1:59.29 in the 200 backstroke to place as the runner up. 

- Magnuson continued to impress with another strong swim in the 100 butterfly. The sophomore raced to a 49.62 finish to move into fifth all-time on the program's leaderboard. Brown and Zuk followed with times of 53.12 and 53.62, respectively. Brown's swim marked a new lifetime best for the senior.

- Ivanov finished with a time of 1:54.37 as the lone competitor in the 200 backstroke. The time propelled the first-year into ninth all-time in program history. 

- Magnuson added to his impressive day with a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle at 47.18. Rene and Hendrickson also grabbed top-three finishes as they tied for third at 47.26, while Zarak followed with a 48.39 effort. 

- Kim outlasted his Diplomat opponent in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:33.34. The time ranks seventh all-time in program history. 

- Smith claimed the top finish in the 200 butterfly at 1:53.13, while Kilponen followed in second place at 1:55.54. McGrath (1:56.80) and Brown (1:58.77) also represented the Garnet in third and fourth place, respectively. Smith's time ranked fourth in program history, while Kilponen moved to 10th all-time.

The Garnet will use the next couple weeks to prepare for the Centennial Conference Championships on February 22-25.
