Retter Crowned National Champion in Discus Throw

ROCHESTER, NY - Swarthmore College women's track & field senior Adria Retter captured the National Championship in the discus throw to open the NCAA National Championships on Thursday morning.

Retter became the second event winner in program history and the first Swarthmore thrower to win a national title. Katie McMenamin was previously the program's lone National Champion after capturing the 1500m crown in 2016.

FULL WOMEN'S DISCUS RESULTS

The Quakertown native continued her dominance in the discus after entering the championships as the national leader in the event by nearly three meters. Retter topped her personal record with a top distance of 51.46m, which was achieved on her final throw of the event. She recorded two throws over 50.00m with her fourth attempt traveling 50.75m.

The Swarthmore standout defeated the runner-up from MIT by nearly three meters and was the only competitor to surpass the 50.00m marker. Retter's best throw destroyed the previous facility record of 50.93m, while also breaking her own program and conference record in the event. The senior moved up to eighth all-time in Division III history in the event.

With her first place finish, Retter garnered All-American status in the discus for the second-straight season. She finished third in the event last spring with a top throw of 44.90m.
