Freeman, Karpenko Highlight Night Two for Men’s Swimming

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's swimming team moved into first place on day two of the Centennial Championships on Friday. The Garnet took home three gold medals, two silver medals, one bronze medal and earned three NCAA B cuts on the evening.

Andrew Karpenko and Ben Freeman both won individual championships and earned NCAA B cuts on the evening. The Garnet also saw a first place victory in the 400 medley relay, which set a program record and also recorded an NCAA B cut.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freeman opened the night with a dominating swim in the 500 freestyle to successfully defend his conference title. The junior earned an NCAA B cut in the event with a time of 4:31.34. Ham Williams-Tracy also qualified for the finals with a sixth place effort at 4:39.00. 

- Karpenko retained his conference championship in the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.49 to earn an NCAA B cut. Ben Wesley also medaled in the event with a second place finish at 1:51.31 as he moved into fourth all-time for the Garnet. Swarthmore has won the event in five of the past six championships. 

- Cami Wilson and Ethan Marotte won silver and bronze in the 50 freestyle. Wilson touched the wall at 20.74, while Marotte finished at 20.79. Cole Griscavage and Vijay Chhabra also qualified for the finals as they finished seventh and eighth, respectively. 

- Swarthmore capped off the night by sweeping the A & B Finals of the 400 medley relay. The team of Joseph Lukner, Karpenko, Wilson and Griscavage won the top final with a time of 3:17.68 to set a new program record and earn an NCAA B cut. The Garnet also took the B Final with the team of Jacob Sherman, Ben Wesley, Ethan Marotte and Benton Greenberg finishing at 3:22.08.
